چکیده

During January and February 2003 vast areas of Australia’s Alpine areas were burnt during a series of massive bushfires (see Fig. 1 in Bureau of Meteorology (2003)). While not minimising any part of the period, two days stand out meteorologically. The first was 18 January 2003, when fires caused the deaths of four people, many other injuries, the loss of over 500 houses and other infrastructure losses, and more than 70 per cent of the parks, forests and pastures in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was burnt (McLeod 2003) (see Fig.1 for place names referred to in the text, and for the topography of the region). The second day was 30 January 2003, when strong, gusty winds over the Victorian Alpine country, associated with high temperatures and low humidity, contributed to the Eastern Victorian fires making major ‘runs’ to the southeast (Bureau of Aust. Met. Mag. 54 (2005) 265-290

Abrupt surface drying and fire weather Part 2: a preliminary synoptic climatology in the forested areas of southern Australia

Dramatic lowering of the humidity at the surface was observed at Canberra Airport and at Port Lincoln Airport AWS respectively during two recent Australian extreme fire weather events, that of the Canberra fires of 18 January 2003, and that of the lower Eyre Peninsula fires of 11 January 2005. These events have been described in more detail in Mills (2005a) and in a companion paper (Mills 2008)...

Abrupt surface drying and fire weather Part 1 : overview and case study of the South Australian fires of 11 January 2005 Graham

It is well known that low relative humidity is an ingredient that leads to higher fire danger due to the relatively rapid response of fine fuels to atmospheric humidity. Rapid fluctuations in relative humidity, though, have not been addressed extensively in fire weather studies or operations, perhaps partly due to the difficulty of observing such fluctuations and the even greater difficulty in ...

A re-examination of the synoptic and mesoscale meteorology of Ash Wednesday 1983

The fires on Ash Wednesday 1983 were some of the most destructive in Australia’s history, with 75 lives lost, more than 2000 houses and 335 000 ha of rural land burnt, and 250 000 stock lost. Bureau of Meteorology (1984) (hereafter BOM84) documents the meteorology of the situation, points to the extreme drought prevailing at the time that led to very dry fuels, and postulates that the mobile up...

On developing a historical fire weather data-set for Australia

The study of past weather and climate is a crucial step in understanding the world around us. Weather and climate vary across the entire spectrum of temporal and spatial scales. This variability provides an envelope for human society, impacting our health and resource availability while setting the stage for natural disasters. Study of the past can assist in understanding the changes expected i...
